Free Batik Classes at the Gmeiner

Date: May 31, 2022 03:00 PM

Venue: Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center

Gail Jones of Muncy Valley, a certified artist educator in both ceramics and fiber through the Pennsylvania Partnership for the Arts, is returning to the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center for a second residency. Last year, Jones taught students how to make mosaics during her popular classes. This year, she is teaching students how to make their own batik fabrics in free classes from Tuesday, May 31 through Saturday, June 11.

Her residency will have three parts: a core group limited to 12 people who will meet for 3 hours at a time over the course of ten days for an intensive experience, two 2-hour “make and take” sessions, for 12 families per session who want to learn but need a shorter course, and a two-day session specifically for 12 quilters. The core group will meet from 3pm to 6pm on 10 days, including Tuesday, May 31, Wednesday, June 1 and Saturday, June 4 through Saturday, June 11.

The core group will explore traditional batik, applying hot wax and submerging natural fiber fabrics into reactive dye baths. Core group members will complete at least two projects during the course of the residency and will have a chance to participate in a closing ceremony on the last day. Adults 18 and older can register for this ten-day course. Registration is free and limited to 12 students.

Make and take sessions will be held from 1pm to 3pm on Saturday, June 4 and Thursday, June 9. This will be a family-friendly project to design a family flag or banner. Participants will use foam to create stamps and use a dye bath to color their 6 by 8-inch panels (one panel per family member). They will be able to take their projects with them at the end of the session. Children under 18 must be supervised by an adult. Registration is free and limited to 36 people (12 families) per session.

The quilters group will meet from 1pm to 3pm on Tuesday, June 7 and Wednesday, June 8. This group will learn about the chemicals, how to prepare the dye bath, and experience dying with two different natural fiber fabrics. They will also get to experience making a personal banner. Adults 18 and older can register for this two-day course. Registration is free and limited to 12 students.
